Back in 2015, I was living and working in Santa Clara, California. I remember the date vividly: June 21st. A few friends and I decided to take a day trip down to Monterey Bay, but we ended up making a detour that would change my life forever.
We stopped by a local animal shelter. At the time, they were over capacity and running a "Summer Discount" on adoptions. What was usually a $150 fee had been cut in half to just $75.
To be honest, I hadn’t planned on bringing a cat home that day. I’ve always loved cats, but I was paralyzed by the "what ifs." What if I couldn’t afford a major vet bill in the future? What if my life changed and I had to move to another country?
Then, I saw her. Juliet and her brother, Romeo, were curled up in the same cage. The second I stepped toward them, Juliet stood up and "talk" to me. I later learned that in crowded shelters, if kittens aren’t adopted within a certain window, they often face a heartbreaking fate.
I walked around the room once more, but my heart kept pulling me back. In the end, I chose Juliet. According to her papers, she was exactly eight weeks old. She was a promise I made to myself—that no matter where life took me, she would always have a home.
